The tense ceasefire between the United States and Iran is on the brink of collapse, according to President Donald Trump. He is currently contemplating the resumption of U.S. naval escorts for vessels traversing the strategic Strait of Hormuz, aiming to counter the ongoing Iranian blockade of this crucial maritime route.
Trump has dismissed recent Iranian peace proposals as “stupid” and insisted that he faces no pressure from within the U.S. to negotiate a settlement. Commenting on the ceasefire that has been in place since April 7, Trump remarked that it is severely weakened. Drawing a grim analogy, he said, “I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support, where the doctor walks in and says: ‘Sir, your loved one has approximately a 1% chance of living.’”
In an effort to de-escalate tensions, the U.S. had recently outlined conditions to Iran aimed at curbing its nuclear program. However, Iran’s counter-proposals were swiftly rejected by Trump. The previous initiative, known as Project Freedom, which involved escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, was abruptly halted last week after just a couple of days. This pause was meant to allow Iran time to consider the U.S. peace proposals. Saudi Arabia, however, opposed the plan, refusing to support what it saw as an escalation by denying the use of its airspace or bases.
The situation remains volatile as oil prices have surged following Iran’s declaration that it will not engage in further discussions regarding the blockade unless its demands are met. These demands include the cessation of hostilities, the lifting of sanctions, release of blocked funds, compensation for war damages, and recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, emphasized that without these conditions being met, no further negotiations would occur.
