Amid ongoing regional tensions, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced a renewed commitment to strengthen ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), following discussions with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed. This dialogue took place on the fringes of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, where both leaders expressed a mutual desire to move beyond historical disputes and focus on future cooperation. These talks come at a critical time, as countries in the region are seeking enhanced collaboration over critical issues such as security and shipping routes.

In an effort to address shared security concerns, Iranian officials are slated to meet with representatives from Gulf nations and Iraq in Oman on September 14. The agenda is expected to center on fostering a better understanding among regional countries and enhancing collective security measures, particularly concerning the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Notably, Bahrain has opted out of participating in these discussions, highlighting ongoing complexities in regional diplomatic relations.

President Pezeshkian also emphasized the importance of bolstering economic collaborations among BRICS nations, advocating for increased use of national currencies in international trade and the development of more robust financial mechanisms. He criticized the dependency on current global financial and trade frameworks, which he argues make emerging economies susceptible to political and economic coercion. Pezeshkian urged BRICS countries to fortify their economic resilience and unity, particularly against unilateral sanctions and attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Highlighting Iran’s strategic advantages, Pezeshkian pointed to the country’s rich energy resources and vital transit networks as potential contributors to the establishment of trade and energy corridors linking BRICS economies. These diplomatic initiatives are particularly significant in light of the heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the growing necessity for regional dialogue and cooperation to ensure security and the stability of global energy supplies.
